“Why can’t I get any hits from Google?”
If your site is brand new, the answer is probably Google’s Age Delay.
With Google’s 48% share of the search engine market, it’s definitely where you want your web site to appear. For new sites, unfortunately, it’s just not going to happen for a little while.
Search Engine experts have reported a 6-8 month delay for new sites to appear in Google’s search results. The reason seems to be based on unscrupulous new sites artificially generating numerous links to get to the top of search results. Unfortunately, Google is blocking a large number of valid new sites as well. But those are the rules for now.
So what can I do about it?
To appear in Google’s organic search results, you can’t do anything but wait (and revel in good rankings in other search engines like Yahoo! and MSN). BUT, there are other things you can do to tap into the traffic mother lode that is Google:
1) Adwords (My personal theory is that the Age Penalty is a secret way to get new site owners hooked on Adwords!) – Adwords is Google’s pay-per-click (PPC) advertising program. You sign up to have your self-designed ad appear at the top of or to the right of organic search results whenever someone searches for your keywords. You only pay Google when someone clicks on your ad and goes to your site. It’s an easy way to make sure you get some visibility on Google when you have a brand new site blocked from organic search results.
2) Blogging – A second way to get possible exposure on Google is by creating a blog on an existing blogging service. Blogging, keeping an online journal of interest to your visitors, is the latest marketing craze on the internet. It allows you to create new content regularly, as well as to relate to your visitors on a more personal level. Creating a blog with a remote blogging service gets around the Google age issue because the primary domain (Blogger.com, for example) is not new. You can blog about events related to your web site and include links to your site for interested users. Since it’s not subject to the Google Age Penalty, your blog content might get picked up in a Google search and feed traffic to your site. It’s also possible to export your blog content via an XML/RSS feed and import it onto a new page on your site. By importing your blog content, your main web site will automatically contain all the latest content from your blog.
